Iran women splurge on makeup despite Islamic restrictions

<div>By Siavosh Ghazi<br />TEHRAN: Banned after the 1979 Islamic revolution, cosmetics like lipstick and nail polish have flooded Iran so much in recent years that it is now the Middle East's second largest beauty products market.<br /><br />Following the revolution, the morality police patrolled the streets, fining or even arresting women who flaunted the strict rules until they were eased after the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.<br />And most women were quick to catch on after a decision to allow imports in the mid-1990s w<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXJ7yWIAWix9UBYKZBElQujytRIY1leoxswM1TatiJZe-GiCrin-XJ9PJm1aY2TyOOQMn9wlrN_0LbyenQGhdv3cDMGKJWer1LqndE6fVDgN5al1ggYmDi_QpAlGUGXsodYMRuDwr0tNI/s1600/iran-women.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479803254015197618" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXJ7yWIAWix9UBYKZBElQujytRIY1leoxswM1TatiJZe-GiCrin-XJ9PJm1aY2TyOOQMn9wlrN_0LbyenQGhdv3cDMGKJWer1LqndE6fVDgN5al1ggYmDi_QpAlGUGXsodYMRuDwr0tNI/s400/iran-women.jpg" style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 400px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 220px; CURSOR: hand" /></a>ith many taking to the streets all dolled-up, especially chic young urbanites.<br /><br />Iranians spend about $2 billion a year on cosmetics and the country of 74 million accounts for 29 percent of the Middle East market, which is dominated by Saudi Arabia, according to a recent survey.<br /><br />Most beauty products are now imported or smuggled into Iran, as the country produces little of its own makeup but has a vast, porous coastline just across the water from modern Gulf city states like Dubai.<br />Almost all popular international brands like Yves Saint Laurent, Guerlain, L'Oreal and Bourjois are available at trendy uptown malls and stores in cities and large towns.<br />"Most specialists estimate that about 700 to $750 million worth of products are imported to Iran illegally," said Abbas Najafi, the head of Iran's counter-trafficking bureau.<br /><br />Vista Bavar, who promotes the recently launched European brand Caprice in Iran, was of the same opinion, stressing that "many products are smuggled into Iran."<br />"The health ministry is very precise about its criteria, which is very good as consumers can be sure about the quality when there is an official seal of approval," Bavar said.<br />"But 50-percent duty fees and red tape work against legal imports," the entrepreneur added.<br /><br />People involved in the beauty business admit that smuggled goods tend to be of poor quality.<br /><br />"Over the past years the market has been flooded with low-quality Chinese products which do not meet the required standards," said a major importer of cosmetics who asked not to be named.<br />But "Chinese products account for about 30 percent of illegal imports and they have their own market in provincial areas and among people with lower income," he added.<br />According to a survey conducted by TMBA, a private economic research institute, about 14 million urban Iranian women aged between 15 and 45 spend $7 on average per month on cosmetics.<br /><br />With the minimum wage in Iran set at $300 and the average monthly income between $600 and $700, that is a fair amount.<br />TMBA said Iranians splurge on cosmetics probably because most of the population is young and urban: half the population is below 30 years old, and 65 percent is urban.<br />Since 1979, women have had to observe the Islamic dress code, mandating that hair and body be modestly covered in public.<br />To abide by the code, outside the home most urban women wear a headscarf, and a loose coat over their regular clothes.<br /><br />Women have also constantly challenged the dress code by sporting shorter, tighter Islamic overcoats and flashing locks of dyed hair under loosely-worn scarves, drawing condemnation and occasional crackdowns by the hardliners in power.<br />Women in government jobs still can not wear makeup at work.<br />"Because of the veil (dress code), young Iranians pay a lot of attention to their faces," which together with hands are the only body parts visible in public, said Mina, who sells cosmetics in the Iranian Capital.<br /><br />"Some girls spend over an hour in front of a mirror to get ready. It varies from region to region and different chilies are used in different versions of this tasty dish. This tomato-based Mexican food recipe is richly flavored with garlic and onions and the avocado, tortilla chips and chicken add even more delicious taste.<br /><br />This is one of the best and most authentic Mexican food recipes and it is believed that Aztec soup was invented to use up stale tortillas, since some versions of the dish use tortillas rather than tortilla chips.<br /><br /><br /><br />1 quart chicken broth<br />2 tomatoes, roasted and peeled<br />2 cloves garlic, peeled<br />1 small white onion<br />2 quajillo chiles, seeded and soaked in hot water 15 minutes<br />4 epazote leaves (optional)<br />4 corn tortillas<br />shredded cheese<br />sliced avocado<br />Mexican crema or sour cream<br />oil as necessary<br /><br /><br /><br />Put the tomatoes, garlic, onion, chiles, and epazote in a blender with just enough of the chicken broth to allow the blades to move and make a smooth puree. Heat about 1 Tbls. of oil in a medium saucepan and fry the puree for about 15 minutes. Add the remainder of the broth and cook another 15 minutes. Add salt to taste.<br />Cut the tortillas into Frito-size strips and fry them in oil until crispy; drain on paper towels. Serve the soup garnished with the tortilla strips, cheese, avocado slices, and cream. Again we cannot determine what is adequate coverage on our own, as any witness to the misery of those who have tried it can readily ascertain. Shar'iah, as always, takes us out of this misery by defining it for us. For men, it is the middle part of the body from navel to knee. <span style="font-size:180%;">For women, it is the entire body except hands and face.</span> These parts must never be exposed to any other person (except in case of genuine need e.g. medical treatment). In addition, the cloth must be neither see-through nor tight fitting. </div><div><br /></div><div>Our dress should provide adornment. It should provide for decent appearance. Our appearance should not be an eyesore for decent human beings. For men, this extends the coverage requirements to include most of the body. For women, the essential requirement is that their dress should identify them as respectable ladies who would be honored not harassed. Additionally, hijab rules aim at protecting them from the gaze of other men. </div><div> </div><div>Our dress should establish our Islamic identity. At the least it should not identify us as followers of another religion. But, additionally it should positively identify us as Muslims.<br />The design of our dress <strong><span style="font-size:180%;color:#ff6666;">must avoid three deadly sins</span></strong>: </div><ul><li><span style="font-size:180%;color:#ff6666;">show off </span></li><br /><li><span style="font-size:180%;color:#ff6666;">arrogance </span></li><br /><li><span style="font-size:180%;color:#ff6666;">and self indulgence</span> </li></ul><div>These are very serious diseases of the heart in their own right that we must avoid at all times. Our garments provide an easy opportunity to nurture them. Hence the need to be extra cautious. One Hadith states "Eat what you feel like and wear what you feel like. But <strong>avoid two things:</strong> <span style="font-size:180%;"><strong>extravagance and arrogance</strong></span>." [Bukhari]. At the risk of stating the obvious one should be reminded that this Hadith establishes an overriding concern that limits our choices within the realm of what is considered halal. It does not do away with the distinction between halal and haram.<br /><br />As one implication of this general requirement, men are also required not to wear their lower garments below the ankle. (Many well-meaning Muslims today have been persuaded that this is a petty issue. This misgiving can be put to rest in a hurry if we just refer to the Hadith of Jabir bin Sulaym, Radi-Allahu anhu, in Abu Dawood. He asked the Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam for some advice when leaving him after his very first meeting. Of the six pieces of advice given him one was: "Never let your lower garment go below the ankles because that is arrogance. And Allah does not like arrogance." Another was "Never belittle a good deed.")<br />Islam has not prescribed a particular dress style, giving us ample room to accommodate our needs, circumstances and tastes. However, these principles are for everyone and forever. Any garment that accommodates these principles will be Islamic dress. This is Islamic formula to dress for success. Eternal success. </div><div> </div><div> </div><br />Allah سبحانه وتعالى said:<br /><br />قُلْ مَنْ حَرَّمَ زِينَةَ اللّهِ الَّتِيَ أَخْرَجَ لِعِبَادِهِ وَالْطَّيِّبَاتِ مِنَ الرِّزْقِ<br />"Say: Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has brought for His servants and the good things of His provision?" [Al-A'raf: 32]<br /><br />At-Tirmidhi narrated from Abdullah ibn Amr who said:<br /><br />‘The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Allah likes to see the signs of His favour (bounties) on His servant,'" <br /><br />i.e. He loves for His servants to enjoy His favour and enjoy the good things He has provided for him.<br /><br />But Allah سبحانه وتعالى hates the haughtiness, arrogance and transgression that may result from a life of ease. So Allah سبحانه وتعالى hates the life of ease if it produced haughtiness, transgression, arrogance and tyranny. Since a life of ease and comfort by the abundant wealth could lead some people to arrogance, tyranny and haughtiness; that is it creates Taraf in them, Islam prohibited that type of luxury. So Islam prevented corruption if it resulted from the abundance of wealth and children, making people arrogant and tyrannical. Islam prohibited that strongly.<br /><br />So when it is said that Taraf is Haram it does not mean the life of ease is Haram, it rather means that arrogance which results from the easy use of wealth is Haram, as Taraf would mean linguistically, and as luxury (Taraf) would mean from the verses of the Qur'an.
